Where did wellness go wrong?

True Wellness Was Never What the World Sold You

What wellness was always meant to be

Let’s strip the meaning of wellness back to the root. Wellness at its core is simply living well — in your body, your soul and your daily life. That is it. Nothing more complicated than that. God designed us — human beings — to thrive in wholeness and He gave us everything we need to do so.

Living well is actually quite simple when we see it through a Biblical lens. God has left us clues — little breadcrumbs of wisdom — throughout.

As Christians, we are called to live well in these ways…

to love (John 15:12)

to live in freedom (Galatians 5:13)

to serve (1Peter 4:10)

to find stillness with the Lord (Psalms 46:10)

to work hard and enjoy life as it is (Ecclesiastes 5:18-20)

to care for our body as the temple that it is (1Corinthians 6:19)

honoring God with it, knowing that we were bought for a high price (1Corinthians 6:20)

to live not in fear and anxiety, but in faith (Matthew 6:25-34)

When we put these pieces into daily practice, we get to experience the peace of God —

“And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:7

What wellness has become

The world will do as the world has always done — it will twist and warp everything that was meant for good into its own watered-down version. Of course, when you understand who the ruler of this world is, it only makes sense.

Wellness is no exception. The wellness industry has absolutely exploded into a world of rigid rules, hacks, and several camps of people who all think that their way is the right way and it is downright confusing.

But here’s the thing: None of these things truly consider how God created us to live well. In fact, it’s become a culture of craving — physical things, comparison, pride in optimization and achievement — just as 1John 2:16 warns us.

Here is what else I’m calling the wellness culture out for…

  • Making wellness a buzzword that has lost its meaning

  • Giving you a laundry list of things you have to do just to get it right

  • Conflicting and confusing messages that leave you more depleted than when you started

  • Creating a system that has taken something God designed for your wholeness and turned it into something that is actively harming you

It’s time to put on the armor of God so that we can reclaim a well life as he intended for us.

I know this not just as an observer — I lived it

I have written about my own experience with this at length — you can read the full story here. But the short version is this...

I spent years so determined to get to the root cause of what was ailing my body that I grew an obsession with it. I did every protocol perfectly — took every supplement, timed perfectly with every meal, eliminated every undesirable food from my diet (not just your standard gluten and dairy, but also things like lemons and olives). I got blood drawn like it was my business and did ALL the testing — food sensitivity testing, stool testing, hormone testing. You name it, I likely did it.

I did it all in the name of W E L L N E S S.

Quick note: I don’t regret it. For one, I didn't know any better. And two, if I didn’t go through all of it, I would not be right where I am today. I know that God knew my path would lead me here, into a position of being able to help other women who want to be truly well. I am incredibly grateful for that.

Here’s what is the most important takeaway — I did all of those things because I just wanted to be well, and I thought that they would make me well.

But, ultimately, it wasn’t the protocols, the eliminations or the tests that healed me.

It was hearing God tell me ENOUGH. And obeying. And shifting my focus to him. And sitting long enough with Him to gain the wisdom I needed all along to understand what true wellness is.

What whole-person wellness actually looks like

The Body —

Being nourished through real food eaten from a peaceful place.

Movement that is genuinely life-giving rather than obligatory.

Sleep that is protected as sacred restoration.

The Soul —

Anchored through Scripture, through time with God, through the kind of morning that sets the tone for everything that follows. If my day doesn’t start with God, I feel it.

Spending more moments with God throughout the day, even if just brief — a prayer of thanks before each meal, short prayers as friends and family come to mind, praise to him for the beautiful sunshine and stunning fall palette.

I find that the more small moments I spend with God, the more peace I have in my soul.

The Mind —

Renewed rather than conformed — transformation through the renewing of the mind, not through compliance with a culture that has lost its way. (Go back to Romans 12:2)

Training the brain to see the positive — for example, I had a client that would dread the week ahead every Sunday evening, so I asked her to start focusing on what she had to look forward to in the upcoming week every time that feeling of dread started to rise to the surface. She no longer feels the dread because she rewired her brain to only acknowledge the positive.

Community and service —

Showing up for the people you love and the communities you serve is so much easier when you are already full. When you have anchored your days in God, nourished yourself well, moved your body, protected your sleep and filled your soul with Jesus — you give from overflow rather than depletion.

Why this is different from everything else you have tried

It’s…

Not a protocol.

Not a trend.

Not another thing to add to the laundry list.

IT IS…

A return. To the rhythms God designed for your whole person — sustainable, Christ-centered, rooted in something that does not fade away.
