How to Feel at Peace in Your Body (Even While Healing)
For a long time, I believed this:
“I’ll feel at peace when my body is finally healed.”
When the symptoms are gone.
When everything is functioning “normally.”
When I no longer have to think about it.
But that moment kept moving.
There was always something else to fix.
Something else to figure out.
Something else to manage.
And without realizing it, I had put my life on hold.
You know the funny thing about this? My husband could see it so clearly. My closest friends saw it. But I was so deep in my desire to just feel better that I was so blind, so unaware, that I was living in this state of limbo. I was in the waiting place. Just waiting… (bonus points to you if you get the reference) But not living.
The shift I didn’t expect
What changed everything wasn’t finally fixing my body.
It was learning how to be at peace with my body exactly as it was, and truly live before everything was fixed.
“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Romans 12:12 ESV
when something opens up
We often think peace comes after healing. But what is it that keeps us from peace in the trenches of our healing?
Fear. Fear loves to steal our peace. At all cost, in every opportunity.
But when we look at what Scripture says, we can be reminded of what Jesus tells us:
“peace, i leave with you; my peace i give to you. not as the world gives do i give to you. let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
john 14:27 esv
Peace can be found in every part of the process. It just takes a shift in your mindset and an opening of your heart, both directed towards God and living in the rhythms he created for you.
Then your body begins to feel supported…
your days are no longer driven by urgency…
your thoughts aren’t constantly centered around symptoms…
This is when something begins to open up.
You begin to live again
You start noticing:
You have more presence with your family
You’re not thinking about your body all day
You make decisions without fear driving them
You feel more steady, even if symptoms still come and go
It is not going to be perfect; perfection is never the goal. But it’s going to make a huge difference in your everyday way of living.
This is what integration looks like
It’s time to do away with the “doing everything “right”” mentality.
It’s time to begin living in a way that supports your body consistently.
It’s time to start:
Returning to your Christ-centered rhythms
Letting go of constant monitoring and making adjustments
Loving your body well so that you can support it in the most nourishing ways
Bringing your health back into its proper place of being simply supported, and is no longer at the center
Trust grows here
This is about trusting God’s creation of your body — that he created you in His image, fearfully and wonderfully, and that it is a temple of the Holy Spirit — and therefore, trusting your body and truly honing that empowerment.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27 ESV
“I PRAISE YOU, FOR I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE. WONDERFUL ARE YOUR WORKS; MY SOUL KNOWS IT VERY WELL.”
PSALM 139:14 ESV
“OR DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU, WHOM YOU HAVE FROM GOD” YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN, FOR YOU WERE BOUGHT WITH A PRICE. SOR GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY.”
1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20 ESV
This level of trust allows for:
Trust that you don’t have to control every outcome.
(knowing that it was never yours to control - Proverbs 3:5)
Trust that you can care for yourself without fear.
(knowing that we all called to have faith over fear - 2 Timothy 1:7)
Trust that your life is meant to be lived, not managed.
(knowing that we are not to worry about tomorrow - Matthew 6:34)
You don’t have to wait
I am shouting this from the rooftops!
You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to feel peace.
You don’t have to wait until every symptom is gone to begin living fully.
There is peace to be found in the process, my friend.
And, it is in that place that you will find so much freedom and empowerment in your body — and most importantly, an even deeper love and connection to Jesus. (in my opinion, per my personal experience)
